Description

Cast bronze. The reclining female figure holds both hands behind her head, revealing deep waves of draped fabric surrounding her body and legs. She has nothing behind her to support her reclining position. The woman's body rests on a platform supported underneath by a pedestal, whose surface matches the folds in the woman's garment.

Umlauf submitted two proposals for the 1959 Dallas Love Field competition: Spirit of Flight (the winning submission) and Four Seasons, which was represented in the guise of the four muses. Although he never created Four Seasons, Reclining Figure I (Muse) is a study for the theme, and may represent a season.
