Description

Cast bronze. A standing woman, hunched forward, clutches a young child against her chest. Both figures have exaggerated facial features and elongated limbs. The woman looks out into the distance, while the child gazes upward, wide-eyed, at the woman.

Umlauf created the model for Refugees II in response to the ravages of World War II. Refugees of all sexes and ages were a common subject for Umlauf. Although he made the sculpture's model in 1945, he didn't cast it in bronze until 1970.
